Neither Here nor There

2000-2005

Neither Here nor There, explores the connection between place, memory and history.  In particular it traces my interest in exploring landscape as a metaphor for the notion of an in-between identity.  Growing up in N. Ireland, I lived within three cultures; Eire, Northern Ireland and Britain.  Since moving to the US my identity is further fragmented by my status as an immigrant. Using mapping elements, scanned images and text, the work navigates a path between places that exist in both my memory and within history.  Mapping serves both as a metaphor and a referent for deciphering meaning. Fragments of geographical iconography such as the modified compass rose serve as surrogate markers for identity.
